A lot of people in Colorado come up to Georgetown every winter to participate in our ice races. We have a lot of families and friends that have been racing together for years. It's a relaxed atmosphere and we have fun finding the balance between control and speed. If you've never been to our events before this page has all the information you'll need.
Our club runs three divisions. Division is what level you and your vehicle are at. Our top level is the Competition Division. These are purpose built ice racing rigs that are usually not street legal. Our next level is the Pro Street Division. These vehicles are street legal and their drivers are more experienced than the Street Stock level. The beginner's level is the Street Stock Division. These vehicles are also street legal, but the majority of the driver's are new to the sport. Once we have the three divisions, we then split the divisions into Men's and Women's classes. This gives us 6 divisions; Women's Competition, Men's Competition, Women's Pro Street, Men's Pro Street, Women's Street Stock and Men's Street Stock. We do this to allow more drivers to participate in the same vehicle.
We then split each division into classes. Classes refer to the type of tires we run. Our Gang hosts 3 classes; Bare Rubber, Studs and Cheaters (Bolts). The Competition divisions run all three classes each race weekend. The Pro Street divisions run Studs and Bare Rubber classes. And the Street Stock class runs Bare Rubber classes only.
As a new driver you can start in any division, but the best way to start is with our Street Stock Bare Rubber classes. We created this division for novice drivers. They can compete against one another separate from the more experienced racers in Pro Street Bare Rubber classes. The vehicles run in this class are completely street legal. No modifications needed! It's required that they be raced the way they were driven to the lake. This helps keep costs down for this class and allows a real ease to entry. Tires run in this division are regular street tires. There are no special tires to make or purchase. If you do have special ice or snow tires (such as Blizzaks or other soft rubber compound) you can simply move to the Pro Street division. Also, Street Stock doesn't require any additional safety equipment (such as helmets).
The process to race is fairly simple. You must register the morning of the event. We reccommend being at the lake as early as possible to get through the Registration lines and get practice. Our Gang starts operations at 7:30 am and Registration closes at 9 am. The first step is to get a Tech. inspection. An Our Gang Member will check your vehicle and tires to make sure you're in compliance with our rules and you can race safely. Most Street Stock participants pass this inspection in less than 5 minutes. (Once you've had an inspection in 2008, you WILL NOT need another formal inspection). Then you take your tech sticker to the Registration trailer. You'll need to fill out a waiver here. (Once you've filled out a waiver in 2008, you WILL NOT have to fill out another one.) Our Treasurer will then take your waiver, registration and Tech fees and have you pick numbers for staging. Once you've done that, you can practice. Practice will open as soon as the tracks have been set up by the Track committee and will remain open until 15 minutes before the Driver's Meeting. You will need to attend the Driver's Meeting to hear rules, which tracks which classes will run and any other important announcements for the day. Our Vice President presents the Driver's Meeting. Afterwards, the races will start.
The order of classes will be announced at the Driver's Meeting. We move from one class to another as they finish, so pay attention for the start of your class. Drivers are paired according to the numbers they choose randomnly at Registration. Each pair goes on track and races head up for the chance to advance. Vehicles start on opposite sides of the track in start gates. You need to pay attention to the Center Ice Official who will line you up in the start gates. Once you are ready, Center Ice will place the flag on the ice, when it lifts, GO! The object is to navigate the course in a counter-clockwise direction and return to your start gate before your opponent. You cannot hit pylons or cut the course or you will be disqualified. Our Gang Members are placed around the course to watch pylons and determine the winner of each heat. If you win your heat, you will advance. We keep running single eliminations until we have we have an over-all winner.
The top 5 in every class will receive prizes and points that accumulate throughout the season. Top top point earner and the runner-up in each class will be recognized at the end of the year banquet.
Ice racing is not intimidating. We have drivers from all levels. There is common knowledge about driving on ice that floats around. The first is to get practice and learn how your vehicle handles the best. The next is to control the throttle; ice is unforgiving when it comes to too much speed. The next is to get out of your warm vehicle and talk to other drivers. Ask questions, watch what others do that works. We are a friendly bunch, but usually new people have to make themselves available. If you're interested in helping flag the races ask an Our Gang Member, we always appreciate help!
Our Gang also hosts are variety of other events. We have Friday Fun Days, a Kid's Race, a 2 Lap Championship race for each division and a Championship Banquet. All of our participants are welcome to attend these as well. There is more information about these events here on our website. We hope to see you out on the ice in 2008!
If this sounds like fun and you're ready to come out and give ice racing a try, you'll need: 1. A Valid Driver's License (remember to bring it with you!) 2. A 4x4 or AWD Vehicle 3. Cash to pay Registration and Tech fees Registration is run the day of the event from 7:30 am to 9 am. Registration fees are $15 per driver per class. Only at the first event you attend, you're vehicle will be teched in and that fee is $5 per vehicle for Street Stock ($10 per vehicle for the other divisions). Remember you may have 2 female and 2 male drivers per vehicle. We always reccommend arriving early to beat the lines and get as much practice time as possible.
